HMP and EMP’s Story of Continuing Life Together at Darcy House

When HMP and EMP joined us at Darcy House Care Home in 2025, their priority was clear. Having spent many happy years together in Cumbria, close to the Lake District, they wanted to remain side by side while receiving the care and support they now needed.
HMP, aged 91, had recently returned home from the hospital, while EMP, aged 94, was living with low-level dementia and an increased risk of falls. They had previously been supported at home, but their needs had grown beyond what could be safely managed in that setting. As a family, they were keen to find a care home in Matlock that could provide expert support without compromising their independence, privacy, or homely environment.
From their first enquiry through to moving in, we worked closely with the couple and their daughter to ensure every decision reflected their wishes. It was important to us that they felt reassured and in control throughout the process. Over time, with open conversations and multiple visits, they felt confident that Darcy House could offer the balance of care and independence they were looking for.
Creating a True Home Away From Home
A key part of HMP and EMP’s transition into Darcy House was ensuring their living space truly felt like their own. Together, we supported them in creating two adjoining rooms: a shared bedroom and a private sitting room where they could relax together, just as they had done at home.
Their sitting room has been thoughtfully recreated using their own furniture and decor, which reflects their style and preserves a strong sense of familiarity. This has allowed them to maintain their routines and enjoy meaningful time together in a space that feels comfortable and recognisable. Their private balcony also offers a peaceful place to enjoy fresh air and continue their shared love of the outdoors.
Since moving in, both HMP and EMP have embraced life at Darcy House in ways that suit them individually. HMP enjoys spending time in their sitting room reading and using his computer, continuing interests he has held for many years. With a lifelong passion for music, including playing the viola, he also makes the most of the nearby music room by listening to his classical music CDs.

EMP, who previously played the violin, enjoys a more social routine and regularly takes part in activities, including the gardening club, where she can continue her love of nature. The flexibility of their environment allows each of them to spend their time as they choose, while still coming together to share moments throughout the day.
We also supported HMP in reconnecting with his love of chess. After expressing an interest in finding someone to play with, our activities team helped introduce him to another resident who shared this passion. They now meet regularly each week, enjoying friendly games together in a relaxed and welcoming setting.
Their journey reflects how personalised care and thoughtful planning can make a meaningful difference. By listening carefully and adapting our approach, we have supported them to maintain their relationship, independence and quality of life.
Their daughter, Annabel, has shared some wonderful words about our team: “I have been impressed with how hard the staff have worked to help mum and dad settle in. The senior staff and the reception staff in particular have been extremely supportive and made me feel that no query is too small or insignificant. There is always somebody to turn to for advice and support, which means so much.”
