Private Gardens

At Darcy House, our beautiful private gardens provide an unrivalled setting with stunning views across the wooded valley and green fields, stretching out towards the River Derwent, Riber Castle, and even the passing Peak Rail steam trains. Our gardens are designed to be both scenic and functional, combining picturesque views with well-planned amenities including patios, accessible paths, raised flowerbeds and comfortable seating throughout. Whether residents wish to stroll safely, relax in the sunshine, or enjoy the company of loved ones, every corner of our grounds has been created to bring independence and connection with nature.

During the warmer months, many of our residents delight in al fresco dining or taking afternoon tea on the patios, with the backdrop of rolling hills and historic landmarks making each moment feel special. The gardens are large enough to welcome entertainers, host arts and craft sessions, and bring much-loved in-house events into the fresh air, while smaller gatherings are equally supported with private seating areas and shaded spots for rest.

Outdoor Activities

Our private gardens are alive with opportunities for residents to enjoy meaningful and stimulating activities. Gardening is particularly popular, with raised beds, a greenhouse and ample space for residents to plant, pot and nurture. Our maintenance manager runs a weekly gardening club and works closely with residents to grow flowers, vegetables and herbs. The produce grown here even makes its way into the dining experience, adding both freshness and a sense of achievement for those involved.

Beyond gardening, residents enjoy a walking group that meets regularly, as well as outdoor games and social events including bowling, balloon tennis, arts and crafts and swing ball. Seasonal highlights such as the summer fete and themed cultural experience days are often hosted outside too, making these gardens a true focal point of community life at our care home in Hackney.

Sensory experiences are also an important part of what makes our outdoor spaces unique. A water feature in the courtyard and a dedicated sensory path lined with lavender, sage and edible flowers provide not only beautiful scents and sounds but also tactile opportunities to connect with nature in a memorable and restorative way. For residents living with dementia or mobility needs, activities are adapted and supported by our full-time activities coordinators, who spend time finding what each individual enjoys and encouraging them at their own pace. For some, this might be taking an active role in gardening, while for others it could simply mean sitting outdoors, watching the wildlife or having a meaningful chat with friends.

A Safe and Serene Space For All

Safety and accessibility are central to our garden design, ensuring that every resident can enjoy them with confidence and comfort. The outdoor areas are enclosed and secure, with handrails positioned along walkways, level surfaces, sheltered patios for wet weather and regular rest areas. The balance of safety with freedom gives residents the confidence to use the gardens independently as much as possible, with assistance on hand whenever it is needed.

The gardens are seamlessly integrated into life at Darcy House, with balconies and patios providing many of our residents with direct access to the outdoors whenever they choose. This allows everyone the independence to step out into the fresh air in their own time, while also being able to join in with wider events or simply spend a quiet moment with a loved one. Surrounded by nature and supported by our high-quality care and facilities, residents at Darcy House can enjoy not only a safe and serene space but one that truly enriches their daily lives.
